Is being connected at all times with others through social media actually making us more lonely?

I guess being able to contact and connect with people so easily online via social media networks, such as Facebook and Twitter, may mean that many are replacing face to face contact with that of online contact where less effort is needed. Social media means we can stay connected without having to give up so much of our time and money, which today is becoming more and more limited, yet through globalization, more and more vital in order for face to face contact with friends and family due to increased travel and relocation for work and leisure than ever before. However, to maintain a true friendship I believe that face to face contact is vital.. is this lacking today, does this make us feel lonely despite our increased ability to stay in touch with so many more people than before social media existed?
